Heriot-Watt University
Postgraduate programme

MSc Reservoir Evaluation and Management

The programme teaches students how to be successful subsurface geoscientists and engineers, able to build predictive models of hydrocarbon reservoir behaviour

Duration

1 year full time in Russia

Language

Exclusively in English

Degree

MSc in Reservoir Evaluation and Management

Programme content

The programme consists of course encompassing a wide range of petroleum engineering fundamentals, relevant to the current oil industry.

  • Reservoir Concepts
  • Reservoir Sedimentology
  • Formation Evaluation
  • Reservoir Engineering
  • Reservoir Simulation
  • Well Test Analysis
  • Rock Mechanics, Geomechanics and Geophysics
  • Geological Modelling and Management

Field trip to Spain

The 10-day field trip, to the Southern Pyrenean Basin and Ebro Basin, enables students to examine rocks deposited in a wide range of environments, including fluvial, shallow marine, deltaic and deep marine. As part of the trip, the teams will build a numerical model of one of the outcrops studied and will simulate fluid flow through the model.

Group project

Students are provided with geological and engineering data. The aim of the project is to calculate the volume of hydrocarbons in place in the reservoir and to propose a development plan.

During the project students have access to state-of-the-art computer technology and industry standard software. Assessment is by means of a written report and by group presentation.

Individual project

Each student is required to carry out a detailed investigation of some topic related to petroleum geoscience or engineering. Projects normally include a wide choice of experimental research, computer modelling and real oilfield problems.

During the project students have access to industry standard software. Assessment is by means of both thesis and oral presentation.

Are there any differences between studying in Russia and the UK?

Studying our MSc programmes in Tomsk, Russia is not significantly different from studying at the main campus of Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, UK. The contents of the programmes are identical. We follow the same standards of teaching and assessing students’ results.

What kind of diploma or certificate will I receive?

Our graduates receive MSc degrees and are rewarded with full-fledged diplomas and certificates from Heriot-Watt University, which do not state that you have completed your education in Russia.

Can I study online?

Yes, you can study a handful of MSc programmes online, including the Petroleum Engineering course. To find out more about your options, the application process, intake deadlines, tuition fees, and other issues related to online learning, please visit the Heriot-Watt Online website.

When do I need to apply?

We process applications from November to the end of July each year. You can apply online, take an English test, and have an interview with us at any time during this period. However, those who are required to get a student visa to study in Russia are strongly encouraged to finish their application process at least two months before we close applications, to allow some time to receive a student visa.

Can I get a scholarship?

There are no scholarships available to non-Russian citizens.

Is there any stipend or monthly allowance?

There is no stipend or monthly allowance. Make sure to budget funds sufficient to cover living expenses. Your minimal monthly expenses are estimated to be around 15 000 RUB.

Do you provide accommodation for students?
